“Ability may get you to the top but it takes character to keep you there” – John Wooden.
Imagine a life without character!! No, it’s not possible, right! It is character that makes us unique from our fellow human beings. Our life depends on the choices that we make and determines the direction. A character gives a definition to you as a person and can be considered as a cornerstone of life; moreover, character depends on the Values which we hold on, and it showcases the quality of our life.
Values, no doubt add colour to our lives. The first positive value that comes to everyone’s mind, I believe, is Honesty since it is the value that we wish to see in others too and if you are asked about the one value that you can’t live without, it would be honesty. Honesty should not only be in words but also in deeds. Have you ever thought about a situation where you will have to believe your own lies? You know the truth also you believe the lie, which will throw a tantrum to your mind and you see the whole thing topsy-turvy. Sounds Scary!
The first lie that we tell is to ourselves where we make us believe that we won’t be able to handle the situation. And then follows a lump of lies which lead us to be a deceitful person. Well, the dictionary definition of honesty is “Free of deceit; truthful and sincere”. Furthermore, in simple terms, Honesty can be defined as ‘Live-the-truth’. Honesty is considered as a very powerful but silent force that slowly affects our lives. More often, we find people opting for shortcut methods to achieve their dreams in life and these shortcut ways are more or less responsible for the lack of honesty. But, trust me, the road of honesty always leads to success.
The word Honesty rather reminds me of the story of ‘The boy who cried, Wolf.’ The story is basically for kids to help them realize the value of honesty in life, but in today’s world, I feel it should be taught to the elderly. In the story, the boy accuses a wolf of trying to get his sheep and reaches out for help. People are cheated two times and the third time when the wolf really comes, no one believes him, and he loses his sheep. People nowadays are cheating their fellow human beings not knowing that it will go back to them just like a boomerang. Also, if you want honest people around you then probably you should also be honest.
Imagine a situation where one of your family members die and a kid in your family asks you why and where the person went, it’s better to let them know the fact that the person is no more, rather than lying to the kid that they have gone to some other place or so. Anyway the kid is going to know about it later, why we can’t be honest and explain it rather than creating an impression of dishonesty in the kid’s mind. They learn from elders and it’s not going to cost you anything by being honest in answering to the kid’s question.
People don’t understand the fact that Honesty helps life to flow smoothly like a river without any interruptions. Guess what, the best part of being honest is that we don’t have to remember the lie which we have told others. Honesty is bliss, so be truthful to you and yourself which would lead you to be honest with your fellow human beings. Honesty, thus, should be the best policy of the people, for the people and by the people. Accepting the fact that you have to anyway face all the situations at some point in life will help you to be honest because people often turn out to be deceitful when they cannot handle different or difficult situations in life.
After all, each of us are just waiting for our turn to die (sore but truth) and why can’t we lead a life with positive values which are the least that you can do to this world and to people around.
